Questions

Plain answers to what people ask us

About what OneLegal does, how Polly works, where your data is kept and how to get started.

The basics

Does OneLegal give legal advice?

No. OneLegal is software for lawyers and businesses. It shows you the source behind each suggestion so you can check it, and you stay in control of every change.

How do we get started?

Book a demo and we will show you OneLegal on your own kind of contract. If you see a free trial button on this website, sign-up is open and you can start one yourself, for one person with a personal email address. If you don’t see it, sign-up isn’t open and a demo is the way in.

Does it cover Scotland and Northern Ireland?

Yes. “UK” means all three legal systems: England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Templates, clauses, execution checks and playbooks are for each one, or say which one they are for.

What about India?

India is the second market. We are building for it, and it is not ready to use yet. Tell us what you need and we will keep you in touch.

Who is OneLegal for?

Law firms and in-house legal teams first, and founders and small businesses without a lawyer of their own. Legal operations and security teams get the controls they ask for.

Polly and AI

What is Polly?

Polly is OneLegal’s AI, for legal work only: contracts, legal documents, laws and regulations. It refuses anything else, such as writing or fixing code, and tells you so.

How do I know an answer is right?

You can check it. Each part of an answer is tied to the exact words of the contract it rests on, and laws come only from OneLegal’s statute packs, never from memory. Figures that are not in the contract are marked. Polly can still be wrong, so a lawyer should read the source.

Does Polly change my contract by itself?

No. Every suggestion appears beside the original and goes into the document, as a tracked change, only when you accept it.

Can we switch Polly off?

Yes. Polly is off for a company until OneLegal switches it on, and each Polly feature can be switched on or off for your company. OneLegal can also stop Polly for everyone at once.

Is our data used to train Polly or kept by the AI provider?

No. Your contracts, prompts and outputs are never used to train or fine-tune any model, and we only use AI providers that agree not to keep them. AI runs on Google Vertex AI in Belgium (EU): nothing is kept there and nothing is used for training.

Can we use our own AI provider?

Yes, on the Business and Enterprise plans. An owner or admin can point Polly at the company’s own account with a provider it chooses, in place of OneLegal’s route. The key can be saved and removed but never read back, the provider’s data location is shown for you to accept first, and the same rules apply: legal work only, every answer tied to its source, and nothing changes in a document until you accept it. Your own provider’s terms then govern what it keeps.

Can Polly give legal advice?

No. OneLegal is software, not a law firm. Polly helps you read, draft and check, and you stay responsible for the work.

Security and data

Is our data used to train AI models?

No. Your contracts, prompts and outputs are never used to train or fine-tune any model, by Oltin or by our AI providers.

Where is our data stored?

UK customers’ data is kept in the UK, including backups and logs. India comes second, and Indian customers’ data will be kept in India. AI runs on Google Vertex AI in Belgium (EU): nothing is kept there and nothing is used for training.

Do you have SOC 2 or ISO 27001?

Not yet. We plan to, and we will not claim a certificate before we have it. The Security page lists the plan.

Who can read our contracts?

People at your company who are on the matter. Matters are kept apart in the data itself, every change is recorded in an audit log that cannot be edited, and OneLegal support sees your account only when you approve it.

How is our data protected?

Data is encrypted in transit with TLS 1.2 or later and at rest with AES-256. OneChat messages and documents are sealed again with your company’s own key.

OneChat

Is OneChat a separate app?

No. It is part of OneLegal and opens from the button at the bottom left of every page, so the conversation is always one click from the contract.

Can our admins read our messages?

No. Admins see how OneChat is used, in numbers. They can’t read conversations, and OneLegal is built so that they can’t.

How long are messages kept?

For your company’s retention period, two years unless you agree another with us (from one to ten years). After that, messages and their documents are deleted.

What can we share?

Links, GIFs and documents: PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument text, RTF, text and CSV, up to 25 MB each. Every file is checked by its contents, not just its name.

Are calls recorded or kept anywhere?

No. Sound and video go straight between your people’s browsers, encrypted end to end. They never pass through or stay on OneLegal’s servers, and nothing is recorded. The conversation shows only that a call happened and how long it lasted.

Will calls work on a slow connection?

Yes. Voices come first: speech needs very little data, and when the connection weakens the picture gets smaller, then pauses, so everyone can still hear each other. Data saver uses less again on mobile data.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. OneChat works in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, in light and dark mode.

Who is Polly?

Polly is the smiling face of OneChat, there to guide you through it. Where your company turns it on, Polly AI answers questions in a chat of your own, and its answers can appear in any conversation when you ask it to.
